Mexican Immigration Specifics

Immigration and Passport Information (Mexico – Tourist Entry as of 10.1.2025)

When you enter Mexico as a tourist (Visitor without permission to engage in paid activities), you may be granted a stay of up to 180 days. The exact number of days is determined by the immigration officer upon entry.
Tourist status does not allow you to work or receive payment in Mexico.

Arriving by Air

  • Most airlines issue the FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) electronically.
  • Your passport will be stamped by immigration, showing the number of days you are authorized to stay.
  • The tourist fee is usually included in the airline ticket for stays longer than 7 days.
  • Keep a copy (digital or printed) of your FMM or entry record during your stay.

Arriving by Road (Land Entry)

  • You must request an FMM at the immigration office at the border.
  • If staying more than 7 days, you must pay the tourist fee at an authorized bank or payment location.
  • If you bring a vehicle, you must also obtain a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) when required.
  • Your vehicle must leave Mexico before the TIP expires.
  • You may not sell, transfer, or use the vehicle for unauthorized purposes in Mexico.

Arriving by Sea

  • You must obtain your FMM tourist permit at the port of entry.
  • Applicable fees must be paid at the port or through the vessel’s agent.
  • Cruise passengers may have simplified procedures but must still comply with immigration rules.

Loss or Theft of Immigration Documents

  • Report the loss or theft to the local police or State Attorney General’s Office (Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado).
  • Take a copy of the police report to the nearest National Immigration Institute (INM) office to request a replacement or correction.
  • Additional identification and fees may be required.
